The Black Forest
The Black Forest Horses are indeed a rare and protected breed originating from the Black Forest in South West Germany.
The origin of the Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg horse breeding can only be speculated. The roots went back centuries. The first Black Forest horse breeding cooperative was founded in 1896. This is where organised breeding begins. The main breeding area is the southern Black Forest with the adjacent regions. The horse breeding association keeps the origin breeding book for this horse breed.
After World War II, over 1200 mares registered in the stud book were counted. The mechanisation in agriculture and forestry as well as in the transport industry led to a rapid decline in the population of the Black Forest cold blood horses until the end of the 1970s. The Black Forest fox had become an endangered breed. Funding measures from the state of Baden-Württemberg and an initially very modest but constantly increasing demand for cold-blooded horses from the Black Forest of the expressive, dry and motivated type prevented the worst.
There are currently over 700 registered mares in the stud book. The Black Forest cold blood is meanwhile also kept in the stud book by more than 10 other German horse breeding associations.
